Yellow Handkerchief

The Yellow Handkerchief is a spooky story written by a ScaryForKids user who goes by the name of Anna. It’s about an Indian girl who is studying for her exams when she gets a strange visit from her aunt.

Yellow Handkerchief

I live at home with my parents and my grandparents in a small village in India. One day, my parents were supposed to go to the temple for worship and my grandparents decided to go with them. They did not want to take me as well, because my exams were fast approaching and I had to study.

They all got ready early in the morning and said goodbye to me before they left. I smiled at them, waved and said, “Don’t be late Mommy! Come back soon, Daddy! Take care, Granny and Grandad! Bye!”.

After they left, I sat down at my desk and started to study my Chemistry notes. I was very weak in this subject and it took about five hours just to complete a chapter!!!

Around midday, I took a break to eat some lunch. After I finished my meal, I took a short break of fifteen minutes to give my poor brain a rest. It was so difficult to try and remember all the different chemical names and formulas. It was getting too boring and monotonous.

Not even ten minutes had passed when I heard the doorbell ring.
Trrringg!! Trrringg!!!

I rushed to see who was there. To my utter surprise, I discovered my Aunt standing on the doorstep. Her house was very from from mine and she hardly ever visited us. I was overjoyed to see her. I hugged her and shouted, “Auntie! Where have you been all these days? You never come to see us. Its been about 3 or 4 years that you had not contacted us. Why?”
She just had a weird smile on her face and said in a soft voice, “I was not here. I went very far. Extremely far. How far you cannot imagine…”

I was confused and said, “Forget about those old days and just come on in! Lets have some fun!!”

She came into the living room and sat on the sofa. I offered her tea. She refused it. I offered her a glass of water. She refused it. She did not have any food but spent a long time chatting with me about my school, my studies, my friends, my parents and many more things. She was there with me for about an hour and the entire time, she kept mopping her brow with a yellow handkerchief.

All of a sudden, she got up and said she was late for something and left. I waved at her and said, “Bye, Auntie! Keep in touch!!”

She had a weird look on her face and said in a gruff voice, “Goodbye!!”

I turned around and went back inside. When I went into the living room, I found that she had left her yellow handkerchief on the sofa. I grabbed it and ran back to the door to return the handkerchief, but she was nowhere to be seen.

“Where did she disappear to so quickly?” I thought.

I walked upstairs and sat back down at my desk to study, thinking of returning the handkerchief to her the next time she comes.

After about 2 or 3 hours, my parents and my grandparents returned. No sooner had they had stepped inside the door than they asked me about my studies.

“I hope you studied properly all this time we have been out!” said my father sternly.

“Yeah Daddy!” I replied. “I am a big girl now and I can study on my own! Oh yes! I forgot to tell you. Smitha Auntie came here. You all were out so you could not meet her. I had a lot of chat with her. She talked to…”

“Who did you say came here?” my father asked. “What did you say? Say it again?”

“Relax Daddy!” I laughed. “Smitha Auntie!! Smitha Auntie came here. You had something to tell her? Don’t worry, she will have to come back. See, she left this yellow handkerchief here.”

“Where?” shouted my dad. “Where is the handkerchief? Give it to me! NOW!”

“Whats wrong with you?” I asked. “Why are you getting so excited?”

“Do as I say!” my father yelled. “Don’t question me!”

I was shocked at such a behaviour of my Daddy. I gave him the handkerchief. He opened it and sat down on the nearest sofa in a way as if he had no backbone. He was just a huge heap. My mommy, granny and Grandpa were all horrified as I had said this.

I asked them “What happened? Why are you all behaving like this?”

My Grandpa replied with a soft voice “She’s dead!! She’s no more. She died 2 years ago.”

“What do you mean?” I shouted. “She came here today!”

I took the yellow handkerchief and found that there was a small note written on it with blood.

It read as follows: “I JUST CAME TO MEET YOUR DAUGHTER. I HAD ASKED YOU TO TAKE HER TO ME BEFORE I DIE BUT YOU NEVER AGREED. I DID NOT COME EARLIER AS I WAS BUSY IN HELL CARRYING OUT THE ORDERS OF THE DEVIL. PLEASED WITH ME, MY MASTER ALLOWED ME A LEAVE FOR A DAY TO COME AND MEET YOUR CHILD. I DON’T KNOW IF I WILL EVER RETURN. GOODBYE”
