The Guests

The Guests is a scary story about a young couple who spend the night in a strange old house. It is based on an old folktale and a version off this story appeared in the book, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.

The Guests

A young man and his wife were on a trip to visit his mother. Usually they arrived in time for supper. They had gotten a late start, and now it was getting dark. They decided to look for a place to stay overnight and go on in the morning.

Just off the road, they saw a small house in the woods. “Maybe they rent rooms”, the wife said. So they stopped to ask. An elderly man and woman came to the door. They didn’t rent rooms, they said. But they would be glad to have them stay overnight as their guests. They had plenty of room, and they would enjoy the company. The old woman made coffee, brought out some cake, and the four of them talked for awhile. Then the young couple were taken to their room. They explained that they wanted to pay for this, but the old man said he would not accept any money.

The young couple got up early the next morning before their hosts had awakened. On a table near the front door, they left an envelope with some money in it for the room. Then they went on to the next town. They stopped at a restaurant and had breakfast. When they told the owner where they had stayed, he was shocked. “That can’t be”, he said. “That house burned to the ground ten years ago, the old man and woman who lived there died in the fire.”

The young couple could not believe it. So they went back to the house. Only now there was no house. All they found was a burned-out shell. They stood staring at the ruins trying to understand what had happened.

Then the woman started screaming! In the rubble, there was a badly burned table and on the table was the envelope they had left there that morning!

  • yeah..they could use the company..it’s kind of lonely being ghost all those years..other ghost are not friendly especially the ones that died poisoned..

  • story is great, but i have a request, sfk. would it be possible for you to make a “random story” link, where it would take you to a random story? because i usually find myself unable to find any new stories since you have them all organized and stuff
    thanks!!

  • So if they hadn’t left the money the house wouldn’t have burned cuz that was the only thing that didn’t burn

  • @ Jeb The whole thriller is about thinking things were there but in reality, they weren’t. It’s kind of like those hitchhiker stories; a young man sees a beautiful young woman walking along the highway on a cold, dark night. She doesn’t really talk much but she looks normal. Then she leaves something like a scarf or the man go gives her a jacket. The man finds out the next day that she was a ghost. So, just imagine you were that young couple or that young man. Think about staying in a “house” that burned down 10 years ago or a man that just wanted to get his jacket back from the ghost girl you gave a ride to the night before. It’s basically a fear by illusions.

  • this reminds me of a story of when my mom was younger… when she was younger she would visit her grandparents. well across the street a house burned down on halloween. none of them survived. every halloween, you could see and hear the kids screaming and crying for help. but all that ended when they knocked down the remains of the house.

  • I don’t see what’s so scary about it. at the very worst, the slept in burnt beds. Or they were in the care of ghosts. they survived the night, the ghosts aren’t haunting them, and plus they theoretically can even retrieve their money. all’s well that ends well.

  • that story was really crazy because they stayed there then find out it has been burned down for ten years!

  • i like this story i read it wen i was little, i was in daycare, the day before halloween

  • I heared this story in the newspaper. But, instead of a hotel and an elderly couple, it was a doll maker and a married couple who visited his shop on their honey-moon. He gave them a free doll which had blue eyes. The next morning, they questioned a man about the dolls shop, he said that there had been a fire. They went and checked the shop, it was a pile of rubble, then they checked the doll, which had become a pile of ashes with one blue eye sticking out.
