Simpsons New Season 19 News
Spider Pig (or Plopper the Pig) is among the guest stars featured in the first episode of Season 19 of The Simpsons, called “He Loves To Fly And He D’ohs,” airing Sunday, Sept. 23. At a press conference at the 2007 Comic-Con in San Diego, a panel of Simpsons staff which included Matt Groening, revealed details of the upcoming season of Simpsons episodes.
The new season opener will feature a couch gag that references The Simpsons Movie and features Spider Pig’s first appearance in the series. (Spider Pig’s fate in the movie was ambiguous as a scene with the loveable pig at the end of the movie was cut at the last minute, but will be included as an extra on the Simpsons Movie DVD).
“This coming season on the TV show, which is in the works, is just about our most ambitious yet,” Simpsons creator Matt Groening said. “The key to the season is that each episode sort of goes back to Square One - like a cosmic Moebius Strip, so the movie will work its way into the show, but you don’t have to have seen the movie to enjoy the show.”
The new season opens with Homer saving Mr. Burns from drowning in a mall fountain. Burns takes him on a whirlwind trip to Chicago on his private plane by way of thanks. Homer is smitten with the luxury jet and all the perks that come with it, including singer Lionel Richie, who serenades him with a customized version of “Say You, Say Me.” After returning home, Homer makes it his mission to find a job that offers him the chance to fly on a corporate jet, and enlists a life coach, guest star Stephen Colbert, to help fulfill this dream.
John Stewart, Jack Black, Lionel Richie, Stephen Colbert, Matt Dillon, Dan Rather, Kelsey Grammer, David Hyde Pierce and John Mahoney are among the upcoming guest voices on the 19th season of The Simpsons.
Season 19 will also feature a Ralph Wiggum episode where Springfield hosts a primary for the next Presidential election. Homer is so fed up with politics that he casts a protest vote for Ralph Wiggum, who goes on to run for office. The episode will guest star Jon Stewart and Dan Rather.
“The new season premiere is September 23rd. Stephen Colbert plays a life coach that Homer gets because he wants to turn his life around. We have a show that has Placido Domingo and Maya Rudolph as guest stars, where Homer becomes an opera star, and he has these groupies who are these middle-aged matrons that chase him around and Marge is really jealous. We also have Jon Stewart coming up later in a political show where they move Springfield’s primary to first in the nation and the candidates come and invade the town and the town is so disgusted, they all write in votes for ‘Ralph Wiggum’ so we’re actually trying to start a ‘Ralph for President’ boom in 2008.”
Sideshow Bob (Kelsey Grammer) will make a return, along with his brother Cecil (David Hyde Pierce). The episode will introduce their father, who will be voiced by John Mahoney, who played their dad in Frasier.
The special Valentine’s Day episode will feature a Sex pistols skit, with Nelson as Sid Vicious, Lisa as Nancy Spungen and Bart as Johnny Rotten.
Season 19’s Halloween episode, Treehouse of Terror XVII, has pop culture TV references to American Idol, Fox Sports, 24 (with Jack Bauer), Family Guy (with Peter Griffin) and House (Dr. House).
Simpsons staff also mentioned an upcoming Simpsons computer game that will poke fun at genre games like Medal of Honor and Grand Theft Auto (retitled Grand Theft Scratchy). Bartman will feature prominently in the game.
Matt Groening also revealed exciting news in the panel discussion about his other series “Futurama” which will be returning in a big way later this year. “We’re doing four straight-to-DVD ‘Futurama’ movies and all-new episodes on Comedy Central starting in 2008. The first DVD for ‘Futurama’ will be out for the holidays.”
