Marvel Comics cancelled a lot of their superhero comics in favor of horror titles in 1949, it signalled a shift in all comic books towards scary stories.
Marvel Mystery Comics, their flagship title, turned into Marvel Tales, beginning with #93, dated August 1949. Marvel Mystery had featured superheroes but Marvel Tales was all horror.
